Why do we read choice books? It goes by many names (independent reading, choice reading, etc.) but in my classroom, I most often call it SSR (Silent Sustained Reading). Why do I have my students do SSR? Self selected reading is what readers do in their adult lives -- no one tells you what to read or when; you find what you like and you read it! My goal is to create life long readers so they need to learn to self-select books, when to ditch books, how to review and recommend a book, and what they like. Plus, readers have higher life incomes, higher rates of success and happiness, lower rates of criminal activity, higher grades in other classes, higher standardized test scores and can even help you live longer. Reading is good for you and FUN!

Each time I finish a book, I try to book talk it (recommend it) to my classes. It's important to note that different students are ready for different books (reading challenge, content, etc.) at different times and that I recommend all kinds of books since I have all kinds of readers. If you have concerns about what your student is reading, I encourage to talk with your student and contact me with any questions or concerns.

Garvey's choice was a quick read with a relatable character. I enjoyed the poetic form of the book and how accessible it was. I would recommend it to readers looking for a quick read.
